Introducing Vicar and Priest-in-Charge
The Rev. Jacob W. Dell
It is with great pleasure that we write to inform you that we have called our next Vicar and Priest-in-Charge of St. Peter’s, the Rev. Jacob W. Dell. Jake obtained an undergraduate degree in History from Yale University, and attended seminary at Nashotah House prior to becoming a U.S. Naval Chaplain. Jake has also held positions at the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society and served as an associate curate at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City. Most recently, and for the past five years, Jake has been the Vicar and Priest-in-Charge at the Holy Trinity Church Inwood, in Manhattan, which he brought back from the brink of closure and successfully turned around. Jake has a proven capacity for intellectual preaching, pastoral care and youth education, as well as significant administrative skills and experience in stewardship, all of which we believe will benefit our parish.
Jake will serve St. Peter’s in a full-time capacity and will take up residence in the vicarage in Millbrook Hollow with his wife Sasha, and daughter Maia. Jake’s tenure at St. Peter’s will begin on September 1, and his first Sunday leading the service will be September 13. We hope to have the opportunity to introduce some of you to Jake and Sasha then, whilst acknowledging that these remain extremely uncertain and challenging times for many. We are also working on a virtual introduction via a parish-wide Zoom call at a date to be determined.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Leslie Heaney and Jim Florack (co-chairs of the Search Committee) and their entire committee for the extraordinarily diligent and thorough search process which they conducted. This involved a serious commitment of time and energy and resulted in a very strong field of candidates for our consideration.
Last but, by no means least, we offer our extreme gratitude to Father Bob Flanagan, who has guided us ex-pertly through this transitional period as our Interim Vicar. Bob has been a calm and professional guide to us all through what have been, and remain, unprecedented times. Bob’s tenure expires on August 31, and the last service over which he presides will be Sunday, August 23. We wish Bob and his wife Lanie best wishes on their next endeavor. Current circumstances prevent a parish send-off, but we hope that Bob and Lanie will return to St. Peter’s at some stage in the future, as we return to something closer to normality.
In closing, we know that this has been a long period of transition and discernment, but it has been a necessary and thoughtful one. We have listened to you, our parishioners, and we have taken the step up to call a full-time priest. This brings with it a new level of financial commitment, for which we will be asking your support going forward. We could not be more thrilled in the calling of Jake Dell, and we look forward to the entire parish getting to know him as we continue to grow in our spiritual journey together.
Yours sincerely, and on behalf of the Vestry of St. Peter’s,
Will Morlock & Julie Turino
