Harvest Hope 2017 – A Huge  Success!

On November 12, Cynthia Larsen and her team – with assistance from the children-

brought 123 bags of Thanksgiving food up to the altar during the  9:30 service.

This food went to the Dover Plains Food Pantry to be passed out to needy families.

The Harvest Hope effort was greatly helped by Marona’s Market, who gave a 10%

discount to anyone filling the Food Pantry  bags.  In addition to the bags of food,

the Harvest Hope project collected $3,555, also given to the the DPFP.

Outreach at St. Peter’s  Church is a long tradition of participation in the well-being of the community.  Outreach commits energy and funding to organizations that work to bring about sustainable progress in the  lives of individuals and families.

The church raises money at the Promises Auction, which is held biennially on the Saturday evening before the first Sunday in October.  The proceeds fund yearly Outreach  grants to local charities.  The next Promises Auction will be September 30, 2018.

Outreach accepts grant applications each year.  The 2018 grant application is posted below in green –  double click to open.   It will be due to St. Peter’s by Friday, March 9.  Grants  will be awarded by April 1st.  If you have any  questions about our grant process, please contact the Outreach  chairpersons listed at the bottom of this page.

St. Peter’s engages in a number of outreach projects throughout the year, including:

Each Christmas St Peter’s provides help to families in extreme hardship. Working in conjunction with local service agencies, the Committee selects one or two families in the area. The parish provides them with material, financial, and moral support, which may take many forms including clothes, toys, books, bicycles, major appliances, or other necessities related to their particular needs.

Christmas-at-Sea Program

Christmas -at-Sea Program provides warm wool caps and scarves for sailors.  Hand knitted items made by parishioners and friends  are distributed in December by the Seaman’s Church Institute of New York.

Episcopal Charities

As the outreach arm of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, Episcopal Charities equips parish-affiliated outreach programs with the means to transform the lives of people in need in their diverse communities. Every program is free of religious content and serves communities in Manhattan, Staten Island, and the Bronx, as well as seven counties in the Hudson River Valley: Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, Sullivan, Orange and Ulster.  Local programs supported by Episcopal Charities  include a food pantry in Amenia, a youth leadership program in Millbrook and a Latino outreach program in northeast Dutchess county which provides classes in English as a second language as well as assistance in navigating US immigration services to recent immigrants.

St. Peter’s accepts donations  of clothing and small household items for the Dover Plains Thrift  Shop.   Donations can be deposited  in the Old  Rectory.
Parishioners and others also contribute gently worn winter coats to help meet a persistent seasonal need.  Volunteers deliver  all items  that are clean
and of manageable size and weight  to the thrift shop.

Harvest Hope raises  funds and food for Thanksgiving meals  for neighbors in need.  The holiday meals are distributed  by the  Community  Action
Agency of Dutchess  County  through Dover  Pantry.
